Still Laughing After All These Years: Melissa Gorga's Honest Rules for a Marriage That Lasts

People ask me all the time how Joe and I are still — dare I say it — fun after all these years. Twenty-five years, three kids, a TV show that puts your marriage under a microscope, businesses, and more family drama than I could ever fit into an episode. And somehow, we still like each other. Like, actually like each other. So let's talk about it, because I promise it's not magic and it's not luck.

We Never Stopped Dating Each Other

This is the number one rule in our house, and I don't care how cliché it sounds. Date night is not optional. It's not a bonus. It's maintenance, the same way your car needs oil.

When the kids were little and money was tight, our date nights were cheap — a slice and a walk, drinks on the porch after bedtime. The point was never the fancy dinner. The point was eye contact and conversation that wasn't about carpool or the business. Even now, we protect that time like it's sacred. Phones down. No shop talk. Just us.

Keep Some Things Off the Record

Living life in the public eye taught us this the hard way, but it applies to everyone: not everything is for everybody. We have inside jokes, private traditions, and certain arguments that will never leave our bedroom. When you share everything with the world, you give the world a seat at your table. Joe and I decided a long time ago who gets a chair and who doesn't.

That's not secrecy — that's protection. Your marriage needs a fence around it, or everyone else's opinions will water it.

We Fight, and Then We Get Over It

Let me be honest because nobody needs another fairy tale: we argue. We've had big fights. Some of you have watched them. But we made a deal early on — we don't say the unforgivable thing just to win. Cruel for the sake of cruel is off the table.

And we don't let things marinate for a week. Joe is a talker, I'm a talker, and eventually somebody cracks a joke and the temperature drops. Laughter has defused more fights in this house than any deep conversation ever has. If you can still make each other laugh mid-argument, you're going to be okay.

Let Each Other Grow

Here's something nobody tells you: you marry one person and twenty-five years later you're both completely different people. Joe didn't marry the woman I am today. I didn't marry the man he is today. The couples that last aren't the ones who stayed the same — they're the ones who kept reintroducing themselves to each other.

I take his new interests seriously. He shows up for mine. We celebrate each other's wins like they're team wins, because they are.

The Little Traditions That Hold It Together

Ours are simple. Coffee together before the house wakes up. A text in the middle of a crazy day that has nothing to do with logistics. Dancing in the kitchen while dinner's on the stove — badly, I might add. Sunday family dinners where the kids know phones don't come to the table.

None of these are groundbreaking. All of them add up.

The Bottom Line

A fun, lasting marriage isn't about grand gestures or never fighting. It's about choosing each other on the boring Tuesdays, keeping a little bit of the world out, and remembering that the person across from you is your teammate, not your opponent. Twenty-five years in, I can tell you — the work is worth it. And the laughing? Never stop the laughing.
